Dashboard gadget relays info on speed cameras

Allows drivers to warn each other

A new dashboard gadget allows drivers to alert others when they have spotted a speed camera.

Drivers need simply press a button on the controversial GPS device and it will then transmit the location of the speedtrap to a processing centre.

The Mini Coyote from Novus is exploiting a loophole in the law, and can deliver the information in 3 seconds - which means that a car travelling 300 yards behind the driver who first spots the trap would receive the warning in time to slow down before the camera.

The device will display how fast you are going, the speed limit and the distance before you hit the camera as well as a warning as to how many times that specific camera has been reported.

But road safety groups are already stepping forward to criticise the device claiming that it will "undermine the ability of police to enforce the limit because drivers would be able to speed with very little risk of being caught".

The Mini Coyote is owned by more than 50,000 French drivers who reported 27,000 traps in September alone.

A spokesperson for the British Government has already come forward to warn that people using the Mini Coyote "could be prosecuted for perverting the course of justice”.

But Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "We think it would be extremely difficult to prosecute someone for perverting the course of justice if they had warned another motorist of speed cameras ahead".

Nigel Carter, from Novus, said: "This is actually a road-safety device because it will help prevent accidents caused by drivers stamping on the brakes when they spot a camera too late. As far as we can see, there is nothing illegal in the unit".

  • These safety groups are mad!

If everyone knows that the speed cameras are out then everyone is going to be travelling below the speed limit.

The only people undermining the police's ability to catch speeding drivers are the police when they stick a camera up rather than patrol in their cars!

  • Perverting the course of Justice? Huh? What a misuse of the legal term. What the Govt really means is 'Diverting The Course of Cash Flow'. This device can save lives and driving licences, but anything that might prevent the flow of punitive revenue must be avoided at all costs eh? Even to the dtriment of Road Safety - this really shows what's going on on the Think Tanks. Posted by Chris Williams, Bridgend
  • When will these people realise that its not speeding that is causing a problem but poor driving. IMHO the reason that this government invests so much time and money on speed cameras is to make money off the driving public. Speed cameras are a useless and unecessary burden in our society. Warning others of their existance is good not bad. Concentrate on driver training and catching the reckless and dangerous minority rather than the safe drivers who happen to go faster. • Great idea, but what should i do on the M42? The last two times I drove it I can't remember seeing another car or what happened as i was transfixed on the speed dial! I feel safer speeding! Posted by John, UK
  • "the safe drivers who happen to go faster"
Oxymoron much? There are some collisions you can't avoid and then there's only one measure of how 'safe' you are; the faster you're going, the more damage you will do. Take a look at the police statistics - most collisions are caused by carelessness but the vast majority of fatalities and serious injuries are caused by speeding - far more than by, say, alcohol. I fully support better driver training, especially for the self-unaware egotists who believe they are safe to speed because, well, they're just better at driving than regular people.

I agree with Nigel Carter about the nuisance and danger of camera-surfers braking sharply when they see a yellow box or the telltale calibration lines on the road but I think the introduction of average speed cameras to replace the gatso snapshot models will turn out to be rather more effective than a little black box that draws your away from the road with a beep when a camera is coming up.

  • it would come to nothing in court. it would be like trying to convict someone who made a phonecall to a friend half an hour later telling them of a camera on such n such road. it comes down to the time it takes people to get the word out, if that's now 3 seconds, bad luck speed gun people. • So often quoted "speed limits are there for a reason" Yes, I agree, they are - TO RAISE CASH!!!!! Posted by SusieM, United Kingdom
  • Hi,

Just to clarify: the mini Coyote is made by Coyote Systems. Novus provides the fixed camera database and is one of the on-line retailer.
For those who bought the French version, the www.coyotesystems.co.uk site now proposes to convert your French mini Coyote to a UK version:

  • " but the vast majority of fatalities and serious injuries are caused by speeding "

For the record, less than 5% are caused by exceeding the speed limit. 30% have exceeding the speed limit as some contributory factor - at least, according to the DfT.

Far more are caused by bad observation at junctions.

  • Speed camera's are simply a con. It truly is a fact that they contribute nothing to road safety. Just a money making racket that are effectively run by "gangsters"
I see a public backlash occuring in the not too distant future. Already static camera's have been "attacked" by irate motorists. The operators in the camera mobile vans may find themselves in danger before long. Either attacked physically or rammed by a vehicle.
Only a few nights ago I heard a group of youths talking about buying a big vehicle modified with iron girders at the front so that they could "call up" their mates on their mobiles to inflict damage on the camera van.
With mobile phones this could easily be "sorted" I took their "ramblings" with a pinch of salt at first, but now that motorists are becoming angrier and angrier ove this subject. It could turn out to be a fact...
