Dell has added to its new "Mini" line, that so far sees just a 9-inch model, with the introduction of the Inspiron Mini 12.

Dell says the the Mini 12 is "ideal for teens, tweens, travelers and 'Tweeters' to surf the web, chat with friends, blog, stream content, upload photos or enjoy online videos, music and games."

Larger than the recent crop of netbooks, the Mini 12 has a 12.1-inch screen and runs Windows Vista. It has a starting weight of 2.72lbs and is 0.92 inch thick.

There's built-in webcam, 1GB of RAM and a choice of 60GB or 80GB hard drive, built-in Bluetooth and 802.11b/g wireless.

The Inspiron Mini 12 is available initially only in Japan through Bic Camera, Kojima and Sofmap stores.

Dell says it will launch online globally by late November with configurations starting under $600, with Ubuntu and Windows XP operating systems also will be available before the end of the year.

UPDATE: Further to the original Japanese launch info, Dell has now issued a UK press release for the Mini 12.

It states" "The Inspiron Mini 12 will be available in UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Austria in mid-November via regional www.dell.com stores."

"Ubuntu and Windows XP operating systems also will be available before the end of the year, and availability will also expand to Spain and Italy."
