Facebook not planning Android app

Says Google's new OS "sucks"

Facebook Not Making Android App 1

Facebook is not planning to create an application for Google's Android mobile phone platform, it has been suggested.

TechCrunch reports that "bad blood" between the two online giants means Facebook has dedicated "zero resources" to Android.

The ill-will is said to be down to a few things - Facebook banning Google's rival Friend Connect, Facebook choosing Microsoft as advertising partner and investor and Google launching Open Social with Facebook rivals.

Facebook offers an application for the iPhone, as well as one for RIM's BlackBerry phones but is looking to others to develop for the Android.

An official spokesperson told TechCrunch that Google or third parties are free to use the Facebook API to build apps using Facebook services.

Meanwhile, off the record, Facebook sources said "Android sucks, it doesn't matter".

  • This isn't surprising. It is going to get too costly supporting a stack of phone operating systems with native apps. As much as I want a native app for accessing our site on Blackberry, iPhone, Sy,bian phones and now the G-Phone, we'll probably just take the route of having a generic mobile friendly CSS which formats pages for smaller screens.
