MadWorld Wii game faces fierce criticism

Group says too violent for family console

Sega is facing mounting pressure over its MadWorld game, over concerns that it is simply too violent for the Nintendo Wii.

British pressure group, Mediawatch-UK, fights for cleaner TV, games and movies, and it is arguing that the game could tarnish the Wii's reputation as a console suitable for the whole family.

Mediawatch-UK says the game, in particular, will "spoil the family fun image" of the Ninty console.

Mediawatch-UK director John Beyer told The Daily Mail: "I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification."

He also told the tabloid: "What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilised values take priority rather than killing and maiming people.

"It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii. I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii."

MadWorld is out in 2009 so expect lots more controversy between then and now!

  • What the rest of the world does it up to them? Exactly!, what I choose to play or what I would let my children play is up to ME, not some dumbass little company

Didn't have any problem with RES4, did they?

  • What an absolute joke. How can a whole platform have a "family fun image"? The Nintendo Wii is about motion sensing gaming and that should never be limited to arbitrary bowling and baseball games. It should be used for every genre there is in order to help the market evolve further. How can a plastic box of electronics have a family image anyway, unless they secretly installed a morality chip? • A storm in a teacup. Clearly from the image we can see that the developers of this game have gone for a comic look and feel, which is hardly realistic. Besides, what I choose to enjoy in my own home and at my own leisure is none of their business. If they find these images of violence so incompatible with family values then what of the often far more graphic images of crucifixion found in their local churches? If they turn on the TV and switch to a news channel at just about any time of the day they would see far worse imagery of real war, crime, and disasters. MadWorld, leave those kids alone! • Haven't they ever heard of a video or dvd player? Man those dangerous things are capable of playing family cartoons one minute, and p0rn the next!

    Ban them too I say!

  • Ah, they've already ruined No More Heroes over here, wouldn't put it past our pathetic classification board to ruin this as well. Posted by Karl, UK
  • It annoys me when the mediawatch and bbfc fools try and flag something like this. All a kid has to do is stay up past 9pm and they can see much more violent stuff on tv and movies.

I am a Wii owner myself, and I would actually like to see more of these sort of games released for it.

@Chris, I totally agree with you.. how can an a whole platform get branded like that.. its pathetic

  • I don't know who John Beyer is, and I have never heard of Mediawatch UK.

I can, however, state with complete confidence that neither Mr Beyer nor his mother, his vicar or the rest of his Mediawatch chums, have ever played Madworld.

  • why do people bash violent games on the wii. You would think parents had enough common sense to set the parental controls on the wii. So even is the kid some how got a copy of the game they wouldn't be able to play it. Besides what kid would think its fun to do something like that in the real world
    Just my 2 cents

  • Thing is, Nintendo always said it was a console for everyone, as in it has different games that will appeal to different people, but something for everoyne and no one complained when they said that; but when it comes down to it, the game has been rated, meaning its illegal to sell to people under the specified age, so anyone who tries to get their hands on thiswill most likely be dissapointed iuf they arent old enough. And even if kids still get hold of it, they're parents are likely to notice it on the console sooner or later Posted by Alex, England
