MySpace joins OpenID sign-in scheme

And teams up with Flixster and Eventful

MySpace has announced it is to join the OpenID coalition that allows people to use the same accounts and passwords across the web.

The benefit for users with an OpenID account is that they don't have to keep creating new accounts and remembering passwords, but can use the one universal log-in on supported sites.

MySpace will join the scheme as a "provider", which means new OpenIDs can be created there, but to use a MySpace OpenID on another OpenID site, MySpace would need to become a "relying party".

The OpenID coalition includes AOL, Google's Blogger, Yahoo and blogging services Vox, WordPress and LiveJournal among many others.

MySpace has also announced that its users will be able to quickly share profile data with two additional partners, Flixster, a movies community site, and Eventful, an events site.
