"The iPhone has been a phenomenal success for us", said Matthew Key, chairman and CEO, Telefónica Europe, O2's parent company.

"We look forward to offering an ever better iPhone 3G experience exclusively to our customers in the UK and Ireland."

The iPhone 3G will be available in the UK through O2 and Carphone Warehouse. iPhone 3G will also be sold online through O2 and Carphone Warehouse. Customers can register their interest in iPhone 3G for regular news and updates at O2's site.

Actual pricing for the device and tariffs are yet to be revealed - but Steve Jobs stated that the 8GB model will not cost more than $199 wherever it launches.

  • "$199 wherever it launches" which likely means £199 in the UK, double the price in the US.

  • *Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff.

If you'd prefer the 16GB version, it's free on our £75 tariff. Then you'll just pay £59 with the £45 tariff and £159 on our £30 and £35 tariffs.
