Google doodle celebrates barcode anniversary

Netizens landing on Google's homepage today will see yet another of the search engine's famous "doodles", this time celebrating the humble barcode.

With Google's logo turned into its barcode equivalent, clicking on the graphic goes through to a search about barcodes, with the significance being that today is the 57th anniversary of the official patent for the barcode.

The barcode was invented in the States back in the Forties with US inventors Norman Woodland and Bernard Silver being granted the patent in 1952.
