RIM acquires Torch Mobile Webkit-based browser experts

Canadian smartphone maker RIM has acquired Torch Mobile, news that will almost certainly see the BlackBerry range of smartphones getting a much improved internet browser.

In a statement on its site Torch Mobile says it "is excited to announce that our company has been acquired by Research In Motion, one of the most renowned mobile technology companies in the world".

Torch Mobile is a company that's expert in WebKit-based mobile browsers, the deployment of which in BlackBerrys, which use the default BlackBerry Internet Service browser, would arguably be an improvement over the current solution.

This looks likely too - Torch Mobile says: "Our team of developers will join RIM’s global organization and will now be focused on utilizing our WebKit-based mobile browser expertise to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the BlackBerry platform".
