Toshiba has announced the launch of the world's first 64GB SDXC memory card. SDXC stands for "SD eXtended Capacity" and is a new standard, following on from SDHC, for storing data of over 32GB and up to 2 terabytes.

As well as a world first, Toshiba is also claiming the world's fastest data transfer rate with read speeds of 60Mbps and write speeds of 35Mbps.

It will be a while before you'll be able to start sticking these cards in your consumer electronics though - if your gadgets will even support such a standard - sample shipments of the new SDXC memory cards for OEM manufacturers will start this November, with the cards due to be available at Japanese retailers next spring.
