India becomes Nokia's second biggest sales market

Overtakes United States for sales

Reuters is reporting that India has overtaken the United States to become its second biggest sales market after China.

"India has quickly become one of the largest markets", Nokia President Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told reporters in New Delhi while on a visit to the region.

Nokia sold 100.8 million phones from April to June and shipped 60 million handsets from its factory in India in the 18 months to August.

Nokia recently set up a design studio in India, the first in a series of global satellite studios to develop ideas for emerging markets and employs 9000 people in India.

"India is not a low-end market. It is a very versatile market in all price points, in all segments", Kallasvuo said.

Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG also have a prescence in India. It was recently estimated that 65% of all handsets made this year will be sold in emerging markets.
