HP offers notebook tracking and recovery service

Take a second to think about the computer you're reading this on. If it was lost or stolen, would you be losing important information? Could it be a security risk?

HP has announced that it's going to be offering a new optional service with future laptops that it sells. The Notebook PC Tracking and Recovery Service will be available for £24.

Software is pre-installed, and the location of the laptop is logged whenever it connects to the Internet. In the unfortunate event that your machine is lost or stolen, you ring up the police and HP, and the company activates software that deletes any important info the next time it logs on to the Internet.

The service is available in Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, the UK, the Netherlands, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bulgaria,
Croatia and Romania.
