Games developer 3D Realms, the creator of Duke Nukem, Prey and Wolfenstein 3D, has been closed down because of a lack of funds.

In news not being greeted by shock in the industry, the veteran developer's main project - Duke Nukem Forever - has spent the last 12 years in development limbo.

Announced over 10 years ago in 1997, the rights to Duke Nukem Forever are owned by games publisher Take Two, that says it will not fund more development time, although it is retaining the rights.

Apogee Software's separate plans for "Duke Nukem Trilogy" for the Sony PSP are unaffected by 3D Realm's closure.
