Philips launches MCD908 DVD Micro Theater

Combines analogue and digital technologies for "best of both"

Philips has launched the MCD908 DVD Micro Theater which they say combines the best of both audio worlds - tubes and chips and analogue and digital.

A compact, converged home entertainment system, this can play both CDs and DVDs.

Combining analogue Hi-Fi tubes that should mean a "warm" sound and low distortion and digital circuits - a Class "D" digital amplifier that this offers a 2 x 75 watts of output but with a relatively small footprint.

The real wood, three-way speakers comprise Neodymium Ribbon Tweeters, Silk Dome mid-range tweeters and 5-inch woofers.

The MCD908 boasts HDMI output while a 12-bit, 108MHz digital-audio converter claims to preserve every detail in the video source, delivering subtle shades and a smoother graduation of colours in the picture.

The system's build quality includes gold-plated connections, "heavy weight" aluminum construction, an ergonomically-designed remote control and a precision-cut metallic keypad with a genuine leather back cover.

DVD-Video, DVD+RW, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW and Picture CD discs can all be played back, while there is connectivity for add-on devices, including coax and optical digital outputs, an active subwoofer point, and SCART, CVBS and S-Video connections.
