Samsung is about to launch a 52- and 70-inch LCD television backlit by LED, a spokesman for the company confirmed to Pocket-lint.

Following companies like Apple, the company has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it will be officially launching a new range at the end of the month at IFA.

The new model, which will be initially be aimed at a small niche market of Home Cinema fans will go on sale by the end of the year in the UK.

The new television promises to offer a massive increase in contrast as Samsung will be able to control which LEDs are lit and which aren't.

"With the current technology light still travels along the tube", the spokesman told us. "With LED we can individually turn off any of the hundreds of lights used."

There is no word on price as yet. But Samsung has said that it will be on sale in the UK in time for Christmas.

The news is in starch contrast to Samsung's number one competitor LG, who has told Pocket-lint that it is over 14 months away from bringing the same technology to the market.

We will keep you posted.
