Microsoft satisfied with its desktop PC dominace is putting all its efforts into doing the same with the mobile phone market.

This morning the software company announced that it plans to develop a series of Windows-based mobile devices with Flextronics Corp, one of the world's largest mobile phone manufacturers.

The plan seems to be to prouduce a cost effective mass market solution called Peabody to then sell to mobile phone operators around the world.

The platform will be based on the Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system and feature GSM/GPRS.

The announcement was made on the first day of the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France.

In addition, Microsoft will also be showing HP's new Windows Mobile-based device: the HP iPAQ Mobile Messenger. This new device, with a full QWERTY keyboard, integrates wireless voice, high-speed Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE) data networking and versatile Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation technologies, allowing users to stay connected to vital business information.
