The next version of the iPhone could get advanced motion-sensing abilities next year, according to Taiwanese manufacturing news sources.

And, if the report is to be believed, it would not just be Apple introducing the new tech but other leading mobile phone manufacturers too.

Smartphones launched by Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Motorola, LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson - as well as Apple - are all expected to come with something called MEMS gyroscopes in 2009, DigiTimes quotes sources as saying.

To give you a clue what this might mean for the new phones - Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus accessory currently uses a form of MEMS gyroscope that can determine rotational motion as do some image stabilising systems in digital photography.
