Sony has found itself embroiled in yet another expensive battery recall programme.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in conjunction with Sony, HP, Toshiba and Dell, today announced a voluntary recall of around 100,000 laptop batteries.

The lithium-ion batteries can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

The advice given is that consumers affected should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

There have been 19 reports of the batteries overheating, including 17 reports of flames/fire with 10 incidents resulting in minor property damage. Two consumers are reported to have experienced minor burns.

The batteries were used in a wide range of models from each manufacturer - more information is provided on the respective sites.
