Symbian has unveiled its latest version of its operating system for mobile phones.

The latest edition - Symbian OS 9 focuses on multimedia elements such as support for the coming generation of multi-mega-pixel cameraphones. Enhanced support for 3D graphics, multimedia and graphics acceleration as well as support for different screen sizes and orientations, and simultaneous multiple displays.

The software also promises to support the latest chips from ARM that themselves promise faster and more powerful phones with improved battery life.

The first phones with the new Symbian OS9 will be introduced in the second half of this year, from a range of different manufacturers.
