Although a few wireless USB products have been on the market for a little while now, the first products have been officially awarded Wireless USB certification.

The first six consumer products announced pass compliance and have gained Wireless USB certification by the USB Implementers Forum.

They are a Dell Inspiron 1720 notebook, a D-Link Wireless USB adapter and 4-port Wireless USB Hub, an Iogear Wireless USB Hub & Adapter kit and a Lenovo Thinkpad T61/T61p 15.4-inch widescreen notebook.

Certified Wireless USB is high-speed wireless connectivity that claims to combine the speed of Hi-Speed USB with the ease-of-use of wire-free technology.

In fact, there are other slighty different short-range wireless technologies such as ultra wideband (UWB) and the high-definition interface (WHDI).

Wireless USB boasts speeds of 480Mbits/sec at 3 metres and 110Mbits/sec at 10 metres and you are not limited by the amount of ports you have - you can connect up to 127 devices.

Consumers are advised to look for the Certified Wireless USB logo on products tested for interoperability and guaranteed to work with other Certified Wireless USB devices.
