We're going truly old skool here, but these new Puma shoes are inspired by the circa 1986 RS Computer trainers.

At the time, the RS Computer was revolutionary, involving a pedometer computer chip inside the trainer.

Info from the pedometer, distance run and the like, could be downloaded to your Apple II via the game port and a big ol' chunky lead (no easily removed parts back then).

Sadly with no electronic components, these nonetheless evoke the retro tech spirit, so are a decent, and probably less smelly, alternative.
