Sony Net-Sharing CAM launched for internet video fans

Sony has launched a new camcorder that is aimed squarely at allowing bloggers and social networking fans, like those of its new Crackle site, to share video on the net.

The new Net-Sharing CAM from Sony will allow users to upload short video clips to the web as well as being able to take 5-megapixel digital still photos.

Sony says the new device can record about five hours of web-ready MPEG4 video footage on a Memory Stick PRO Duo media card, when recording with the default settings on a 2GB media card.

With selectable picture qualities ranging from QVGA/15 frames per second to VGA/30 frames per second, which can be viewed on televisions.

It will also have a built-in flash, 4x digital zoom and a 2.4-inch colour LCD screen. Powered with rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries, Sony claim users will get about 90 minutes off a single charge.

The camcorder will sport a “sharemark” button so users can easily “tag” or select video and photos they want to upload via the pre-loaded software.

The Picture Motion Browser software supplied in the box for the PC makes it possible to quickly edit and store footage, based on preferences. Bundled driver software is also included so the device can double as a live webcam.

The Sony Net-sharing CAM will be available in September for about $200. No word as yet to a UK launch.
