TomTom files a photo-real display patent for GPS

Get real

4 July 2007 17:01 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

TomTom has filed a patent for an interesting new feature for their in-car GPS devices.

The innovation seems to show a photo-real image, or a live (cached?) video feed on the GPS unit's screen.

It's not clear exactly how this could be applied, but the thinking is that the ultra real display could be used to show drivers exactly where to turn off.

This would be an improvement for sat nav users who have trouble judging distances and therefore get confused with the "Turn in 50 yards/metres" instructions which can be hard to gauge in built-up areas.

Or they could just buy the GPS "For Dummies" (link below) that probably holds their hand and counts down for them...
