Toshiba cuts exclusive Intel ties

Will use AMD chips in 20% of laptops

News from Reuters claims that Toshiba, the world's fourth largest laptop manufacturer, has broken its exclusive ties with Intel and will begin putting AMD chips in some of its laptop ranges.

The news, which follows Dell's similar announcement in 2006, has sparked speculation that Intel, who currently enjoys around an 80% market share, might soon see an end to its market dominance.

Toshiba plans to use AMD's microprocessors in around 20% of "moderate-priced" standard models from this summer, a move which could see the prices for these models drop by around £40 pounds.
