Samsung has created a SIM card with 1GB of onboard memory, which means that mobile phone storage capacities should be bumped up fairly soon.
The card is technically called S-SIM and is a smart card IC-based card that first into the regular SIM card slot. It’s also compatible with MMC cards and USB interfaces so it should be easy to get stored information off the SIM if you need to.
Hopefully this doesn’t mean that mobile manufacturers will remove expandable card slots from handsets, as it’s very easy to store media on a removable card and transfer it to the PC with a reader rather than connect the mobile. But data can be stored more securely on the SIM card as it can be password protected to the handset.
