Casio announces 12 megapixel compact Exilim EX-Z1200

World-leading "flagship" camera

In Tokyo today Casio has announced the worldwide release of the newest model in their slim-line series of Exilim digital cameras - the Exilim Zoom EX-Z1200.

We're already fans of Casio's modest but well performing Exilim range so would happily cover a new version coming out, but this is particularly interesting as, with its 12.1 effective megapixel resolution, it boasts to be the highest available in any compact digital camera.

The new camera has instantly become Casio’s flagship Exilim Zoom product, even though it's only been a year since Casio released the then-revolutionary Exilim Zoom EX-Z1000, a world first compact 10.1 megapixel digi-cam, so they've clearly been busy in the meantime.

As well as a goes-without-saying amazing level of detail and crystal-clear images the new camera incorporates CCD-shift image stabilization and the latest Exilim Engine 2.0 image processing module with motion analysis technology.

These features work together to help prevent blurry shots due to shaky hands, subject movement or poor focus when photographing moving subjects.

In addition, the auto-tracking AF system now combines both face detection, something that's becoming an increasingly popular feature in digi-cams, and motion analysis technologies for sharp focus.

Other specifications of interest are a 3x optical zoom (adequate rather than amazing) and a good-sized 2.8-inch wide bright LCD.

The Casio EXILIM Zoom EX-Z1200 will be available in the UK and Eire from late May 2007 in silver and black, with a retail price guide of £279.99.
