Samsung announces development of 8GB microSD

The little card with the big memory

An announcement has come from the Korean headquarters of electronics manufacturer Samsung that it has developed, and is going to eventually be producing, an 8GB microSD memory card.

The tiny card will be capable of storing 2000 MP3 music files, 4,000 digital photos, or around about five DVD-quality movies.

microSD cards measure a mere 15 x 11 x 0.7mm and are commonly used in mobile phones, MP3 players and GPS devices.

When produced the 8GB card will be the highest capacity available to date, 4GB being the largest available on the market up to now.

The card will boast a data write speed of 6MBps which is an improvement on current microSD write speeds.

The cards won’t be available until mid-2008, and then probably only initially in the Far East. No pricing has been announced for any territories as of yet.
