Format battle continues over Blu-ray and HD DVD at CES

The Blu-ray assocation has announced that EA, VIvendi Universal Games, Sun Microsystems and Texas Instruments has pledged their allegiance to the recording standard.

The move sees Blu-ray gain support in the gaming industry, something which is it backing on with use of the disc format in the Playstation 3 when it is likely to launch next year.

However Toshiba and the HD DVD group have fought back with announcements that they will have films and hardware for consumers by the end of the year.

Universal and Paramount even went as far as announcing their line-ups for the format

Universal titles revealed for HD DVD release include the following films: Van Helsing, The Bourne Supremacy and The Chronicles of Riddick. In addition, Universal plans to release HD DVD versions of such catalog titles as: Apollo 13, U-571, 12 Monkeys, Dune, The Thing, End of Days, Backdraft, Waterworld, The Bone Collector, Spy Game, Pitch Black, Conan the Barbarian and Dante's Peak.

Paramount titles revealed for HD DVD release include the following films: The Manchurian Candidate, SpongeBob Squarepants, Elizabeth Town, Coach Carter, Italian Job, School of Rock and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. In addition, Universal plans to release HD DVD versions of such catalog titles as: Forest Gump, Braveheart, Ghost, Grease, Mission Impossible 2, Black Rain, Save the Last Dance, Sleepy Hollow, U2 Rattle and Hum, Vanilla Sky, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Star Trek: First Contact, and We Were Soldiers.
