Yahoo to close auction site

eBay's market dominance too strong

9 May 2007 11:51 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Yahoo US Auctions will be shut down from June this year as the competition from eBay is just too great. eBay enjoys an astounding 94% share of the online auction market in the US, leaving very little room for competitors.

A message on the site reads: "After careful consideration, we have decided to close down our Yahoo! US and Canada Auction sites to better serve our valued customers through other Yahoo! properties".

The last day to list an item is June 3, 2007 with the last day to bid or buy June 16, 2007.

The Yahoo Auctions site for Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan are unaffected however and Yahoo will still run other e-commerce sites such as Yahoo Shopping and Yahoo Classifieds.

This comes soon after the Yahoo announcement that it is going to be closing the Yahoo Photos and encouraging consumers to move to the Yahoo! owned Flickr.
