UK sends over 133 million texts to see in new year

New Years party goers sent a record 133 million text messages on New Year's Day, smashing previous records by more than 20 million.

The data was recorded between midnight on new year's eve and midnight on the 1st January. The recording breaking day follows a big year for the five mobile phone operators in the UK.

According to the mobile data Associations, an industry body that monitors and promotes SMS, a record 25 billion texts were sent last year. That's equivalent to 68 million a day.

Industry experts say the figure is set to rise to around 30 billion this year, despite competition from picture and video messaging.

Texting was invented to allow engineers building Britain's mobile phone network to communicate and was made available to the public by Vodafone in 1992.
