Two years on and Sony has admitted that it is feeling the pinch from Nintendo and dropped the price of the PSP in the US.

Effective today, American shoppers will be able to pick up the PSP Core Pack for $169.99, a saving of $30 had they bought it yesterday.

Sony hopes that the new price point will "accelerate" sales.

However the price still puts it over $40 above Nintendo's handheld console that is still enjoying favour with gamers following a redesigned shell.

UK customers will not however be getting the discount instead having to pay £149.99, the equivalent of $239 for the same box.
