Despite its high price and what appeared to be a lacklustre launch in the UK, the Sony PlayStation 3 has become the fastest selling games console in the UK.

Official figures released to gaming industry website GamesIndustry.biz from Chart-Track state that 165,000 consoles were bought in the two days following the consoles launch.

The numbers means that Sony beats the Wii and Xbox 360 but not the PlayStation Portable.

Although demand was high for the Nintendo Wii at its launch, stock shortages meant the company could only make 105,000 available for its first weekend.

The news also means that Sony who reportedly brought in 220,000 consoles in the UK, still have an estimated 55,000 consoles on the shelves in shops around the country.
