SanDisk to launch permanent storage medium for digital photography

Archival storage is like "the new digital film"

SanDisk is planning to release a new form of storage media that it hopes will provide archival storage for photographers.

The "new digital film" as SanDisk has referred to it is a write-once medium that lasts for up to 100 years.

Although the company is keeping mum about the technology for now, it is believed to be bsed on holographic memory.

In an interview with PC Magazine, Greg Rhine, the head of SanDisk's consumer operations said, "It eliminates the computer from the equation".

"It doesn't need the computer for usage. You shoot it once, develop it, and then store it."

"It's permanently stored on the card, and not rewriteable."

This is quite a turnaround for SanDisk, who are one of the top flash memory producers in the world.
