After 25 years, it seems the video player has been served its last rites. Dixons, who controls over 60 per cent of the retail electronic market in the UK has announced that it has stopped selling VCR units in favour of DVD players."We are now entering the digital age and the new DVD technology available represents a step-change in picture quality and convenience," said marketing director John Mewett.
DVD hasn't taken long to dominate the home entertainment market. Launched in the mid nineties, the player has quickly gained on the video cassettes market. Last year DVD disc sales out performed VHS and it seems this year with the avent of PVR systems and price reductions in the DVD recorder market, VHS just can't offer what it use to.
