Any excuse for a wee dram and slice of haggis, us

"Oor Rabbie" - the Scots' Bard. His poems have inspired generations of Scots despite, or perhaps because of, their wonderful use of the Scots' vernacular. If you're unfamiliar with his work give this site a try – it’s not as inaccessible as you might think. This site lists his most popular poems and also tells you all you need to know about the man himself.

Almost as important as the poetry is the annual festival - Burns Night - which falls on January 25 (Burns's presumed birthday) and entails a heady blend of delicious food, pomp and ceremony and of course plenty of whisky to wash it down. If you've never been to one, you really must give it a go.

But bear in mind the words from the great man:
"Whene'er to drink you are inclin'd,
Or cutty sarks rin in your mind,
Think! ye may buy the joys o'er dear:
Remember Tam o Shanter's mare."
