DAB radio soon to broadcast images

Radio merges with TV

Radio and TV may slowly be merging, as a trial kicks off in London this week to test digital radio with picture slideshows.

DAB broadcasts with colour image slideshows will be trialled in London for 2 months by Gcap Media, Emap Digital, Switch Digital, Virgin Radio, and Chrysalis Radio.

Testers will be given a beta version of a new portable radio with colour screen from iRiver, so that they can see the slideshows that will be transmitted during the trial, and that will include station logos, artist pictures, information, and single and album art, as well as advertising.

Capital Radio, Heart, Magic, and Virgin Xtreme are all taking part in the trail.

“As well as enhancing the experience of our listeners with images to support the programmes they already love, Slideshow means new dynamics for advertisers by adding logos and pictures and more detailed information to radio commercials, and that’s a very powerful proposition”, said Andrew Harrison, CEO of RadioCentre.
