7.1MP and ultra compact bodies

Pentax has released two new compact cameras, the Optio T30 and the Optio M30, both 7.1MP models, with the former boasting slightly better specifications than the other.

Both feature Pentax “Digital SR”, what the company calls “Shake Reduction”, but which actually compensates for low light situations by boosting the ISO to a maximum of 3200, but does not activate any mechanical image stabilisation.

Both models also feature Face Recognition AF and AE, whereby the camera searches for faces in the frame and focuses on them, as well as ensuring exposure is set optimally.

The T30 has a big 3-inch LCD monitor at the back that is touch-sensitive and has a My Drawing mode that lets you use a stylus to draw on the screen to illustrate or annotate images. It comes with 19MB of built in memory, and will retail for £200.

The slightly more basic M30 is ultra-slim, measuring just 18mm, has a 3x zoom, 21MB of memory, and will be on sale for £140.
