Messaging will still be the most popular mobile phone service through 2011

Texts will give way to MMS and email

Messaging will still be the most popular data usage on mobile phone for at least the next 4 years, despite the growth of content and other services, says JupiterResearch.

Indeed, over 70% of premium mobile services revenues will be from messaging in 2011.

The market in Europe for content, services and messaging will grow from €21.9 billion in 2006 to €27.7 billion in 2011, with content seeing a rise from €2.2 billion to €7.9 billion in 2011.

Text messaging, or SMS, will decrease, but will be offset by growth in MMS, email, and IM.

The outlook isn't great for mobile services, for although the paying audience will increase, it wont reach 50% penetration within 5 years.

“Mobile operators and new entrants in the mobile space must leverage the peer-to-peer nature of a personal communications platform to creat a new form of content creation and consumption”, says Thomas Husson, a mobile analyst and JupiterResearch.
