Walkman and Cyber-Shot phones boost Sony Ericsson profits

Almost 75 million phones sold last year

Sony Ericsson has announced strong sales results for 2006 on the back of the success of its Cyber-shot and Walkman ranges.

The company announced its Q4 and 2006 results with the news that the company has seen year on year volume and sales growth of over 60%.

The news means that Sony Ericsson 74.8 million mobile phones and generated a turnover of 10,959 million Euros.

Within that 74.8 million were 17 million phones, almost double the amount Apple is hoping to sell of its new iPhone by 2008.

Sony Ericsson also saw a strong shift in sales at the end of the year with Q4 accounting for 26 or the 71 million units sold in total.

The company is putting its success down to the success of products such as the K800/K790 Cyber-shot phone and Walkman phone line-up.

Sony Ericsson estimates the 2006 global handset market as being around 980 million units, higher than previous forecasts of over 950 million units for the year.

On this basis the company believes it has outperformed the market during the quarter, gaining around 1% of market share sequentially, to achieve a global market share of approximately 9% during Q4.
