Toshiba quietly announces 51GB HD DVD

Triple-layer for extra storage

9 January 2007 17:58 GMT / By Amber Maitland

Toshiba has let it slip during CES that it has developed a triple-layer HD DVD disc that can store up to 51GB of data.

A single-layer disc can only hold 15GB, and a dual-layer, 30GB.

Toshiba's new design stores 17GB of data in each layer, so that the triple-layer disc can cram in more data than a dual-layer Blu-ray disc, which holds 50GB.

The company hopes to have it approved by the DVD standards board by the end of the year.

So that leaves the question, how much will a triple-layer Blu-ray disc hold?
