Smart has given the world the first glimpse of its new fortwo, which will hit showrooms in autumn 2007.

Launched back in 1998, the original Smart Fortwo (the City Coupe as it was known) revolutionised the way people viewed urban driving, despite weak sales, and its tiny proportions, ecological credentials and funky design have influenced the creation of a slew of city runarounds.

The new Fortwo has a fresh, more masculine appearance, but retains its unmistakably iconic look. The striking tridion safety cell and plastic body panels remain but it will be getting an uprated three-cylinder petrol engine, 19.5cm increase in length, improved ride comfort, and a new five-gear transmission system that delivers much better fuel economy. The cabrio version also gets an electric-powered soft top.

UK pricing and specification are yet to be announced.
