After recently launching a red iPod nano for Bono’s RED project to help AIDS patients in Africa, Apple has quietly added an 8GB red nano to its lineup.

The original red nano was only 4GB in size, but it seems Apple aims to give people more choice in how they support RED. The 8GB version retails for around $249 (£131), and stores twice the number of tracks as the $200 (£104) 4GB version. In the UK, the 4GB version retails for £129, while the 8GB models sells for £170.

Although nanos are offered in a range of candy colours, black was previously the only colour for the 8GB model.

Apple will donate $10 from each nano that it sells to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa.

Steve Jobs said at the launch of the RED iPod nano, “Now customers can buy the best music player in the world and do something to help the world at the same time. We’re honoured to work with Bono, (RED), and this team to contribute to an incredibly important initiate and help change the way people think about AIDS in Africa”.

Only one question, Apple: why not donate all the profits from the RED nanos to the cause?
