Nintendo may add DVD player to Wii

Special edition Wii for Japan rumoured for release next year

Nintendo’s Wii player is much less expensive than the Xbox 360, with its support for HD DVD, and the PS3, with its built-in Blu-ray player. Wii doesn’t support high-def formats, and can’t even play movie CDs.

But according to UK gaming mag EDGE, Nintendo may release a Wii with DVD movie playback support in Japan next year. This space-saving idea will mean that you won’t have to clutter your TV set-up with an extra DVD player.

EDGE also reports that US news network CNN has signed up to provide content for the News Channel in the US and Japan.
