New survey finds Hackney full of hit and runners

It’s been a bad week for Hackney - first it was named by Channel 4 as the UK’s worst place to live, and now it’s been shamed as having the highest rate of incidents where drivers fail to stop after a collision.

The crime-ridden borough - along with Haringey and Newham - is the focus of a new joint campaign between Transport for London (TfL) and the Metropolitan Police after it was revealed a staggering 25% of people in the borough involved in a crash fail to stop. The rate in Haringey is just lower at 23% and in Newham it’s 22%, according to TfL statistics.

Recent research suggests a significant link between uninsured drivers and serious motoring offences. Uninsured drivers are 10 times more likely to have been convicted of drink driving, six times more likely to drive a non-road worthy vehicle; and three times more likely to drive without due care and attention.

To tackle the problem and remove illegal vehicles from the road, TfL and the police are carrying out a month-long campaign.

Jenny Jones, the mayor of London's road safety ambassador, said: "This kind of policing is about denying criminals use of the roads, saving the ordinary driver from higher insurance premiums and reducing casualties".
