Mexico denies permission for Yahoo to beam Time Capsule into space

Yahoo’s broadcasting plans for its Time Capsule have gone somewhat awry after permission to mount a laser to the top of the pyramid at Teotihuacan in Mexico was denied.

As Pocket-lint reported yesterday, the digital contents of the Capsule were going to be beamed by laser into space later this month, but organisers are scrambling to find another site.

A Yahoo spokesperson offered the following explanation: “We have worked closely with Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) to ensure that this historic site is respected and not adversely affected as part of this project".

“After evaluating all the technical and operational aspects, INAH has determined that it would be very difficult to move forward with this endeavor."

“Therefore we have decided to move the location of the event. We will continue to work closely with INAH and will donate a copy of the time capsule to them to be studied once the project is complete.”

No hard feelings, then – except that Manuel Mazzanti, head of marketing for Yahoo Mexico, has said that the company has ruled out finding another site in Mexico.
