Asus CEO Jonney Shih took to the stage at Mobile World Conference 2013 in Barcelona to reveal the Asus Fonepad, a 7-inch tablet with full 3G phone capabilities.

Rather than the "two devices, one solution" logic of the Asus Padfone Infinity, the Fonepad is the all-in-one solution.

This 3G HSPA+ device has a 7-inch 1280 x 800 pixel display and comes loaded with an Intel Atom Z2420 for low power consumption that, according to Shih, will mean 10hours of battery life.

It's possible to make phone calls if you want to play Dom Joly for the day, as well as video calls and all the usual tablet-based touchscreen tasks - whether social media, web browsing or snapping shots via the 3-megapixel rear or 1.2-megapixel front-facing cameras.

The rear camera will capture only 720p video, but there's enough power on tap to playback 1080p video you might have imported to the device.

The streamlined metallic finish of the device is available in either titanium grey or champage gold, but the big reveal is its price: $249 (£165) buys the basic model.

It may be a 7-inch tablet, but the profile is pretty slim at 10.4mm thick. That's a size that would do any smartphone proud, but the weight of 340g might put you off making longer calls.

It will be available in 8GB or 16GB variants, with a SD card slot so you can expand on storage.

There's no word on pricing or availability for the UK for the Asus Fonepad, but this is the second enormous phone we've seen released at MWC 2013: the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 also offers full phone functionality.

UPDATE: Asus has confirmed that the Fonepad will be available in late Q2 2013 in the UK, with prices starting from £179 for the 16GB model, but specifies that pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.
