Tesco plans range of budget PC software

Own-brand software to increase low-cost options

Tesco, in its slow march to take over the world, is planning to launch a range of Tesco Value software.

Taking on software giants like Microsoft and Symantec, the supermarket chain plans to sell its own-brand security and office software, as well as a photo editing package.

Tesco is able to develop the software because of a deal with software distributor Formjet, who produces Ability Office and sells the basic version for £20.99. Tesco’s range will be priced at under £20.

“When it comes to software there is little choice and prices are high”, Daniel Cook, Tesco buyer, said. “Our new range of software changes this, bringing choice and value to the market that has offered little of either for too long.”

Tesco estimates the UK computer software market is worth about £8.5 billion, and it wants a slice of that itself. The retailer is increasingly focusing on non-food products, and offers finance, insurance, phone, and broadband services.
