It seems that one of the biggest trends at IFA this year is that of the Windows 8 "hybrid PC", a combination of tablet and keyboard, that can turn a touch device into a laptop and back.

Not wishing to be left behind by equivalents from Samsung, Sony, et al, is HP. It has announced the HP Envy x2, a 11.6-inch device that runs the latest operating system from Microsoft and features Beats Audio system which the manufacturer hopes will give it that extra edge over the rest.

Weighing 1.4kg when the keyboard is attached, 0.68kg when not, the Envy x2 has a HD IPS panel, which should ensure decent brightness (400-nit), and front and rear cameras - it does double as a tablet, after all. The front is HD for webcam duties, the rear 8-megapixel for snapping the family, etc.

NFC is built into the hybrid PC, for use with media sharing, and HP has added proprietary software, including HP Connected Photo, an app that syncs photos across multiple devices and offers basic editing options. There's also HP Connected Music powered by Meridian for music downloads, internet radio and more.

Pricing is yet to be announced, but the HP Envy x2 will be released in time for the Christmas holiday season.

UPDATE: Pocket-lint now has UK pricing and availability details. The HP Envy x2 will be available from late October for £799.
