Stelios promises cheaper calls with easyMobile

Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder and head of EasyGroup has revealed that he has plans to do the same to the mobile phone industry as he has for the low-budget airline industry - ie try and make a cheaper offering.

Teaming up with TDC, a mobile phone operator in Denmark, the two companies have agreed to launch a service in December in the UK. EasyMobile as it will be called will then if successful in the UK branch out into other European countries such as the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.

The premise, making easyMobile different from your run of the mill mobile operator is that it won't be selling handsets. With no handsets to subsidise Stelios believes that he will be able to make tariffs considerably lower than other operators in the UK.

But with TDC not having any presence in the UK setting up the network won't be easy. The plan will be to buy airspace from other operators in the UK.
However, not everyone is thrilled with the idea of a new mobile operator in Europe. Orange, has already started proceedings to prevent the company from using the colour orange in its marketing.
