Ricoh has joined Nikon, Fujifilm, and Canon in informally declaring the 24th August “New Camera Day” by releasing the Caplio R5.

The 7.24MP compact camera boasts in impressive zoom range of 7.1x optical, which measures from 28-200mm in a 35mm equivalent range.

CCD-shift vibration correction has also been incorporated to stabilise images in low-light situations to avoid camera shake.

Ricoh promises reduced noise thanks to Smooth Imaging Engine II image processing that allows the camera’s “film speed” to reach ISO 1600.

Other features include a superior macro mode that lets you get up to 1cm away from an object at the wide end and up to 14cm away at the tele end, and a 2.5-inch LCD.
