Guba.com slashes premium video download prices

Both rental videos and download-to-own prices dropped

Guba.com may have just started a price war among video-download sites by dropping prices both on rental videos and download-to-own titles.

A 24-hour video rental from Guba.com used cost from $1.79 to $2.99, but now ranges from $0.49 to $0.99 for new titles.

In addition, DTO titles will range from $4.99 instead of $9.99 for older films, to $9.99 instead of $19.99 for new releases.

Guba’s videos are hampered somewhat by the fact that they’re only transferable to a Windows Media device, which rules out iPod video players, and cannot be burned to DVD to watch on a standalone player.

The site hosts premium content from Warner Bros and Sony Pictures studios, as well as TV shows from NBC.

Guba didn’t say how long the prices would last, saying only that it was for a “limited time,” and is designed to attract new members away from other recent entrants into the video download world.

Whether the low prices will draw people who are using other sites, like CinemaNow, that let users download and burn to DVD for use in standalone DVD players, is debatable.
